ImpactAs a leader on the engineering team at Orb, you'll drive
technical strategy and execution and manage engineers on our
product engineering team. Along with your product and design
partners, you'll work closely with our customers to understand pain
points in their business processes and help incorporate those
insights into our product roadmap.Orb has a broad range of
technical challenges that you'll tackle in concert with our
team:
- Our product data model should be simple to understand and
powerful enough to support the sophisticated needs of an array of
businesses - our customers range from fast-scaling AI startups to
public companies that rely on us to solve their monetization
challenges
- Our system needs to maintain the scaling characteristics to
support real-time ingestion and query, which come with the design
challenges of performance, consistency, and load isolation. These
characteristics play a big role in every part of the product
experience
- Orb's product approach centers around extensibility while being
opinionated about defaults. Every product team at Orb needs to
learn how to cater to both developers who will build on our
platform and cross-functional audiences who need their workflows
delivered out of the boxThe billing engine team is responsible for
extending Orb's position as the most flexible billing platform in
the market, focused on expanding subscription management and
pricing capabilities. You'll touch the most critical abstractions
in the Orb technical domain, ranging from contracts & prepaid
commitments to subscription modifications and sophisticated
invoicing setups. The billing engine is the cornerstone of Orb's
functionality, tying into both the integration ecosystem and the
finance & data products.About You
- You have 5+ years of experience in software engineering, with
2+ years as an engineering manager or tech lead manager
equivalent.
- Enthusiastic about coaching and up-leveling execution across a
broad range of technical challenges.
- You will hold the team's bar for technical excellence, and be
the pace-setter on the team.
- Passionate about building mindful engineering and product
processes, ensuring that our team can continue to build quickly and
serve our customers for years to come.
- Based in the San Francisco Bay Area or willing to relocate
(with support from Orb)You might be a good fit if you:
- Are comfortable navigating complexity and ambiguity, bringing
clarity and execution rigor to the team
- Have a deep technical understanding of distributed systems,
data modeling, and system architecture
- Enjoy understanding the nitty gritty of technical domains
deeplyIn order to thoughtfully scale the company and avoid
downstream inequities, we don't use leveling titles at Orb. You
will not see us use prefixes like "Senior" in our job descriptions.

Orb.Our Technical ProcessWe're using React, TypeScript, Tailwind
CSS, Python, PostgreSQL, and Kafka. We believe great engineers can
learn any stack, so you do not need experience with these specific
tools and we encourage you to apply regardless. We believe in
shipping code quickly and continuously.Please note: We value
in-person collaboration and have built a hybrid, in office culture
with 3 days/week at our HQ in downtown San Francisco. We see it as
